How to Make These Easy Crochet Turkey Place Mats

Crochet Thanksgiving Turkey Place Mats

A desire to dress up my table at Thanksgiving led me to make these easy-to-crochet, turkey place mats a couple of years ago.

They’re a great size so I have used them as actual place mats but I have also used them as pot holders to put under hot dishes and on the dessert table under all our pumpkin and apple pies.

They’re easy to clean, too. I throw them in the washing machine on the gentle cycle and lay them flat to dry and while they might fade a tiny bit over time they haven’t yet (and they’ve been through at least 3 washes.

The pattern was originally available on Yarnspirations but I can’t find it there anymore. You can, though, find it for free here: Crochet Turkey Place Mat Pattern.

These are the yarns I used:

Body: Lily Sugar’n Cream cotton yarn in “Jute”
Feathers: Peaches & Creme cotton yarn in “Shades of Rust” (I believe I found this at Walmart)
Feet & Beak: Lily Sugar’n Cream cotton yarn in “Yellow”
Eyes: Lily Sugar’n Cream cotton yarn in “Black”

You certainly don’t have to use the same colors I did. Lily Sugar’n Cream has several ombre yarns that would work instead of the Peaches & Creme yarn.

Using an ombre yarn allowed for the “feathers” to appear to be a mix of colors and each one is then just a little different from the other. The adults were enchanted the first year we used them and the kids loved them so much they gave them names.

The main body (the circle of brown) measures 11 1/2 inches across. Including the feathers, the diameter is 18 inches. From the top of the feathers to the bottom of the body is 15 inches.

If I remember correctly, it took about 3-4 hours to make each one so I did one a night while watching TV for a couple of weeks to have enough for our large gathering.

They were a lot of fun to make (even those little feet!).

Enjoy!

This is so cute and looks like it was really easy to make! I’ll have to try it. I did a stuffed turkey one year to have as a table decoration. It was so cute, too! Super easy because the feathers were created by working up granny squared. You had to work a little because the feathers, beak, etc. needed to be stitched on. But if you had a free day, you could work up the whole thing start-to-finish.

This is the one I used! https://www.petalstopicots.com/thanksgiving-turkey-crochet-pattern/

Julie, that would be a perfect addition to the place mats! Guess what I’ll be doing in the next week or two! 😉 Thanks!
