There are always going to be a few challenges when you're working to acquire a new skill but this hobby can be extremely relaxing and fulfilling once you master a few basics. A good starter package will cover those basics in great detail.
Fortunately, even a slightly less than perfect set of directions can be rounded out with a video or two on YouTube.
You want to start with something very easy because even creating the foundation chain for a project can seem overwhelming at first. However, once you understand how to create flat, simple pieces it's much easier to learn what comes next with a lot less frustration.
Most of these kits come with everything you need to begin so you won't need to buy anything else. If you were to go with just a book instead, you'd be left having to buy a number of supplies and the endless number of choices there are for yarn and hooks could sidetrack you right off the bat. There's one that does require you buy your own yarn but it's still a good combination of tools and isntructions.
The patterns are also geared towards grown-up projects like dishcloths, hats, scarves and place mats so you can make things you'd actually use.
Getting a boxed set with everything will save you time and usually costs less because you start out with low cost fibers and hooks. That's okay, though - it gives you a chance to make sure you like the hobby before you invest too much more.
Watch out - once you get going you may find yourself browsing yarn aisles at the local craft store way more than you ever thought possible!
